One Million Photos Taken From the International Space Station
Nate Bergey has created several data visualizations using 1,129,177 photos taken from the International Space Station. Since most images from the ISS are of land masses, Bergey found that plotting all of the images creates a fuzzy map of the world.

I love some of the names on here, but I also think it’s fascinating (though I often forget) just how sparsely populate much of California is.
This map tells me two things.
1. DC real estate is soooo expensive.
2. Especially along the Red Line.
(There are benefits to staying in the same apartment for six years, because this makes it frightening to think about moving).

This Map Shows Where All The Trees Are In The US
NASA’s Earth Observatory just released a map illustrating where all the trees are in America. The map was created over six years by Josef Kellndorfer and Wayne Walker of the Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC) in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Geological Survey. The dark swaths of green represent parts of the country with the greatest concentration of biomass. You can see dense tree cover in the Pacific Northwest as well New England, which has been reforested after intensive logging in the 18th and 19th centuries.
