Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City could have used a zamboni after the Rays-Royals game was called this afternoon.
Oh yeah, and it’s May 2nd.

…And the game went on for three more innings after that!

Photo Op of the Day: A Reporter’s Instagram Self Reveals a Near-Death Experience
Who knew taking selfies could get so dangerous? After Sun Sports reporter Kelly Nash took an Instagram of herself during a Red Sox batting practice, she later discovered that a flying ball had narrowly avoided hitting her in the skull. On an interesting side note, Nash later credited a DVD copy of the film Angels in the Outfieldshe had been carrying with her for saving the day.

In our darkest times, our nation can always count on baseball to help bring us back.

Baseball helps heal our souls. Read No. 8 from this Bill Simmons post from 2001. And then there’s this piece from 9.22.01 from the White Sox site: The crowd of 29,627 reacted warmly, standing, cheering and singing along with Old Blue Eyes, as New Englanders continued to show that their hearts are with the victims of last Tuesday’s horrific acts of terrorism.

In case you were wondering if the Mets lost today, there’s a Twitter account for that.

"Baseball is unique in the pantheon of professional American sports. It’s the only one where time doesn’t end your game. It’s the only one where offense and defense are totally compartmentalized. And it’s the only sport that actually works on radio. Have you ever tried listening to football on the radio. It’s better than nothing, but you can’t picture the action. You only get updates as the action unfolds. It’s the same with basketball and hockey. There’s a lot of energy, but it’s too much to see in your head. Baseball, on the other hand, is the perfect sport for radio. It’s slow and it’s routine. You can picture a backdoor slider in your head. You know what a sharp single to right looks like. You can see the ball sailing deep into center field in a way you could never see a run up the middle on radio."

As a new season of Major League Baseball begins, one photographer focuses on baseballs past — that is, baseballs that have lain dormant well after their last pitch.

For years, photographer Don Hamerman walked his dog near an old baseball diamond in Stamford, Conn. And in all different seasons, in all kinds of weather, Hamerman picked up old baseballs.

He brought them back to his studio, where they sat around for years until he finally decided to start photographing them in 2005.

Hamerman, who hasn’t been to a ballgame in 10 years, admits that he cares more about aesthetics than history. He says he doesn’t even know what baseballs are made of — he just loves the way they look.

For my local heroes, and my hometown team, today marks an opening day with markedly different expectations.

I don’t know what slogan the Nats have come up with to replace “Natitude,” although I know that Davey Johnson is going with “World Series or Bust.”

And while the Sox are in a bit of a rebuilding year (demolition and replacement?), I hope the post-Valentine era gives them a chance to do what hasn’t been done in decades… help put the Yankees in last place, starting today!

So Go Nats, Go Sawx, and welcome back, baseball!

After a horrendous season for the Red Sox, and a great season with an untimely end for the Nationals, I can engage in a bit of schadenfreude while also congratulating the Tigers
shorterexcerpts:

Happy Yankees Elimination Day!
(I know, getting down 0-3 in an ALCS is a hard place to be, especially when game 4 gets postponed. I mean has any team ever been in that situation and rallied to win the ALCS?)

It didn’t happen last night, but today, Teddy finally won the #Nationals Presidents Race!

Watching the NL East Champion Nationals (or at least their bench players… The Goon Squad) on a foggy night.

Sadly, the division championship didn’t lead to a Teddy win in the Presidents Race. Maybe tomorrow?
