Georgetown’s Otto Porter to declare for the NBA draft
I think we all saw this coming, and with an almost guaranteed pick in the top 10, it makes the most sense for Otto.
As a Hoya fan, I know that it will be hard not to wonder “what if,” about next season, and “what happened” about the FGCU debacle, but Otto, I was always proud to watch you wear the blue and gray, and I wish you the best in the NBA.

If Michigan wins tonight, I will be the winner of @CasualHoya’s 350+ person bracket contest. While no money is involved, I could win the following…

A gift bag containing one very casual headband, bottles of CasuALE shipped directly to your doorstep, and a Casual Award named in your honor for next season! (via Casual Bracket Contest is Back! Win a Plethora of Prizes Including a New Car*! - Casual Hoya)

Having previously tasted the delicious CasuALE, all I can say is Go Blue!
UPDATE: Oh well.

Retired NBA star Yao Ming is using his international renown and domestic status as one of China’s most recognizable public citizens to try to convince his fellow Chinese citizens to stop seeking products made from elephant ivory and rhino horn, hoping to curb the demand that fuels poaching in Africa and is helping bring Kenyan elephants and rhinos perilously close to extinction. The former Houston Rockets center arrived in Kenya on Friday, Aug. 10, 2012 — his first-ever visit to the African nation — to meet with local scientists and conservationists, to begin filming and to see the animals first-hand.

Watching the Wizards and Pacers at Verizon Ctr makes me appreciate Georgetown’s fan support.

(Watching a basketball game from the 400 level also makes me appreciate our season ticket location).

March Madness Mascot Trivia

I made this contest for a pizza party at the office today.  Let’s see how good you are:

1) Several colleges and universities are built on hilltops, but only one team in the tournament uses that as its mascot.  Who are they (and why does their mascot look a bit like Grimace from McDonalds)?  _______________________________

2) This year’s tournament has two “Blue” teams (with blue in the name), one is a tournament regular and the other is a solid mid-major. What are the two teams?

_______________________________        _______________________________

3)  Michigan State wears Spartans on the front of their jerseys, but so does one other team, that’s a bit closer to home (being DC). Who are they? _______________________________

4) What Midwestern school might have decided that “amber waves of grain” might not be assertive enough, but stuck with similar subject matter?  ___________________________________

5) This year’s tournament has a fair bit of wind blowing through it. Name the three schools with these breezy mascots:

Cyclones: ______________________________

Gaels:  ________________________________

Gaels: _________________________________

6) We’re far from a full moon, but lupine teams show up in several brackets. Can you name the school associated with:

Wolverines: _________________________

Wolfpack: __________________________

Lobos: _____________________________

Bona-Wolf __________________________ (I swear I didn’t just make that up).

7) Two schools have “swash-buckling” mascots from out of history/literature..Who are they and what are the mascots?

________________________________     ________________________________

8) Four schools have variations on the color red in the name of their mascot. (Hint, all four mascots start with “C”). Who are they?

________________________________     _________________________________

________________________________     _________________________________

Bonus: Does this year’s tournament have more (pick one):

____ Cats (including big cats)            ___ Dogs (including wolves  ___ Other Mammals

____ Birds

Congrats to Chris Condon (the first set of correct answers) and Matt Golden (first all correct plus bonus).
