It’s home to a bacterium discovered by NASA scientists that can eat and grow on arsenic instead of phosphorous, one of the basic building blocks of life.  Mono Lake is a fascinatingly strange place (even outside of this discovery).  It makes sense that they’re talking about it in relation to extraterrestrial life, because visiting the lake can feel very alien.
