The Complete Family Tree Of College Mascots
If not complete, this is still a massive compilation.
It looks like the Nationals want to make sure President Taft starts his inaugural racing season with an inferiority complex.
The Racing Presidents took a trip to visit their likenesses at Mount Rushmore to celebrate President’s Day.
Of course it wouldn’t be right if they weren’t racing, so fans were able to vote on who would reach the monument first — Teddy or new President Taft.
Teddy won by a large margin, proving that it’ll take Bill more than just a fancy suit and a handsome mustache to win over Nats fans. (via Racing Presidents at Mount Rushmore)
I made this contest for a pizza party at the office today. Let’s see how good you are:
1) Several colleges and universities are built on hilltops, but only one team in the tournament uses that as its mascot. Who are they (and why does their mascot look a bit like Grimace from McDonalds)? _______________________________
2) This year’s tournament has two “Blue” teams (with blue in the name), one is a tournament regular and the other is a solid mid-major. What are the two teams?
_______________________________ _______________________________
3) Michigan State wears Spartans on the front of their jerseys, but so does one other team, that’s a bit closer to home (being DC). Who are they? _______________________________
4) What Midwestern school might have decided that “amber waves of grain” might not be assertive enough, but stuck with similar subject matter? ___________________________________
5) This year’s tournament has a fair bit of wind blowing through it. Name the three schools with these breezy mascots:
Cyclones: ______________________________
Gaels: ________________________________
Gaels: _________________________________
6) We’re far from a full moon, but lupine teams show up in several brackets. Can you name the school associated with:
Wolverines: _________________________
Wolfpack: __________________________
Lobos: _____________________________
Bona-Wolf __________________________ (I swear I didn’t just make that up).
7) Two schools have “swash-buckling” mascots from out of history/literature..Who are they and what are the mascots?
________________________________ ________________________________
8) Four schools have variations on the color red in the name of their mascot. (Hint, all four mascots start with “C”). Who are they?
________________________________ _________________________________
________________________________ _________________________________
Bonus: Does this year’s tournament have more (pick one):
____ Cats (including big cats) ___ Dogs (including wolves ___ Other Mammals
____ Birds
Congrats to Chris Condon (the first set of correct answers) and Matt Golden (first all correct plus bonus).

The Washington Nationals racing presidents went on tour last night. (I bet they still wouldn’t let Teddy win).
To celebrate Presidents’ Day, mascots dressed as U.S. presidents compete in a race between periods of the New York Islanders-Ottawa Senators game at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on February 20, 2012 in Uniondale, New York. The Islanders lost 6-0, with Erik Karlsson and Jason Spezza each scoring a pair of goals.

Rest in Peace, Jack the Bulldog (1998-2011)
After 80 or so dog years, Jack the Bulldog, (Georgetown’s first live mascot after a long hiatus) has died.
Brought to campus by the “Bring Back Jack” movement in 1998, he moved into New South and LXR residence halls, with Rev. Scott Pilarz, S.J. He retired to Scranton when his Pilarz became president of the University of Scranton. Jack passed away today in Voorhees, NJ, at Pilarz’s parents home.
Jack’s successor, also named Jack (to be precise, John. S. Carroll), is alive and well on the Hilltop, but we’ll miss “the old Jack,” with his loveable slobber and his love of keg beer and ice cubes.
Our thoughts and prayers go to the Pilarz family, and our memories go with Jack.
Lie down, forever, lie down.
