Spectacular Aurorae Erupt Over Norway

Over the weekend, the Earth’s magnetic field was struck by a coronal mass ejection (CME). The CME — a vast bubble of solar plasma that had erupted from the sun on Jan. 19 — took longer than expected to travel through interplanetary space, but on Sunday it made contact.

The Atlantic Road - Norway. This looks fairly terrifying.

Atlanterhavsveien was voted “Norwegian Construction of the Century” on 27 September 2005. The road’s sharp turns and wild nature have ranked it first on The Guardian’s list of the world’s best road trips. Even in bad weather conditions it stays open, which can be a thrilling experience.

I was wondering what the speed limits in Norway were but then realized it didn’t matter. I’d still want to take this at 110mph. More great shots of this crazy road here.

Norway (in summer) is a place I’d like to visit.

In Svalbard, Norway, the sun stays out for almost 24 hours at times. The sun basically never sets.

A dinner of chicken and beef kabobs, with grilled squash and peppers set the stage for our farewell dinner with our downstairs neighbors, Nicholas and Ida, who are headed home to Norway, before setting off on their next adventure to Addis Ababa. The meats were marinated with rosemary, thyme, olive oil and lemon.

Fun fact that we learned about Norwegians: apparently Easter is a big holiday for Norwegians, not necessarily because of Jesus, but because everyone takes two weeks off, heads to their summer cabins, and watches crime dramas or reads crime novels all day!
