Photo Op of the Day: A Reporter’s Instagram Self Reveals a Near-Death Experience
Who knew taking selfies could get so dangerous? After Sun Sports reporter Kelly Nash took an Instagram of herself during a Red Sox batting practice, she later discovered that a flying ball had narrowly avoided hitting her in the skull. On an interesting side note, Nash later credited a DVD copy of the film Angels in the Outfieldshe had been carrying with her for saving the day.

For my local heroes, and my hometown team, today marks an opening day with markedly different expectations.

I don’t know what slogan the Nats have come up with to replace “Natitude,” although I know that Davey Johnson is going with “World Series or Bust.”

And while the Sox are in a bit of a rebuilding year (demolition and replacement?), I hope the post-Valentine era gives them a chance to do what hasn’t been done in decades… help put the Yankees in last place, starting today!

So Go Nats, Go Sawx, and welcome back, baseball!

"By midmorning, cable talk shows were mentioning the incident and there was a debate on Twitter over whether the Boston crowd was predominantly booing Obama, or merely chanting “Yooouuukkk."

However, some of them were saying “Boo-urns”.

Papelbon: No more Riverdance
- Though he was born in Baton Rouge, Jonathan Papelbon always seemed to work hard to make Boston his home. The Red Sox closer, who will depart for the Philadelphia Phillies after reportedly agreeing to a roughly $50 million deal yesterday, provided a high-octane presence that will be missed on the field and in the city.

The last couple years have been up and down, but thanks for the memories, Paps!

Red Sox owner John W. Henry was cruising through town in his Volvo SUV Friday listening to sports talk radio - shouldn’t he know better? - when he heard some caustic claims about him and his Sox that he simply could not let go unchallenged.

So Henry, a dispassionate man with a quiet voice, motored off to the Brighton studios of 98.5 The Sports Hub and angrily demanded to be heard on air.

“When you’re misleading the public, you should be challenged,’’ Henry told cohosts Michael Felger and Tony Massarotti.

The hosts, who have been critical of the team in the wake of its stunning September collapse, were only too happy to accommodate their uninvited guest. In the wide-ranging 70-minute interview that followed, a combative Henry had his say, answering questions that surely had his employees back at Fenway Park squirming.

"

The following is not mathematically rigorous, since the events of yesterday evening were contingent upon one another in various ways. But just for fun, let’s put all of them together in sequence:

— The Red Sox had just a 0.3 percent chance of failing to make the playoffs on Sept. 3.

— The Rays had just a 0.3 percent chance of coming back after trailing 7-0 with two innings to play.

— The Red Sox had only about a 2 percent chance of losing their game against Baltimore, when the Orioles were down to their last strike.

— The Rays had about a 2 percent chance of winning in the bottom of the 9th, with Johnson also down to his last strike.

Multiply those four probabilities together, and you get a combined probability of about one chance in 278 million of all these events coming together in quite this way.

When confronted with numbers like these, you have to start to ask a few questions, statistical and existential.

While my Red Sox are fumbling (badly) down the stretch, I’m happy to see my newer team, the Nationals, closing great with 6 out of 7 against the Phils and Braves (and one more series to go at Florida).  Nice to have real hope for contention heading into next season.  Now let’s land a great starter and centerfielder to round out the roster.

They say baseball is a game of inches, but it’s really a game of little details. Sox captain Jason Varitek paints or tapes his nails so pitchers can see his signs easier. Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield never lets his fingertips touch the stitches when he throws a pitch, and Adrian Gonzalez hits with the name of his favorite psalm emblazoned on his bat. Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Stan Grossfeld took a long lens around Fenway Park to capture the scene up close and personal. (17 photos)
