"Happiness is excitement that has found a settling down place, but there is always a little corner that keeps flapping around."

- From the Mixed-up Files of Basil E. Frankweiler.

In memory of the great E. L. Konigsburg, an author who taught us to laugh and dream with her thoughtful children’s books - Happiness will always abound as long as her books are flapping around (and they are… at the Library).

A Map of Loss: The AIDS Quilt Goes Online

Over the last 25 years, families and friends of those who have passed away from AIDS have contributed 6’-by-3’ panels — about the size of an average grave — to a giant tapestry known as the AIDS Quilt. Today that quilt is, in a literal sense, monumental, its size a testament to the disease’s toll. With nearly 50,000 panels, it weighs more than 53 tons and would cover 1.3 million square feet were it ever to be displayed all at once. It is said to be the largest piece of community folk art in the world.
The quilt is now on display in its entirety on the National Mall. But “in its entirety” does not mean “all at once.” The quilt is too big for the Mall to hold. Instead, droves of volunteers cycle the sections on and off the lawns.
But there is one place you can see the quilt all together, all at once. And that’s online.

"The whole purpose of places like Starbucks is for people with no decision-making ability whatsoever to make six decisions just to buy one cup of coffee. Short, tall, light, dark, caf, decaf, low-fat, non-fat, etc. So people who don’t know what the hell they’re doing or who on earth they are can, for only $2.95, get not just a cup of coffee but an absolutely defining sense of self."

RIP Nora Ephron. Thanks for always being so quotable.

Sendak’s Legacy

What’s gonna set you free

Look inside and you’ll see

When you’ve got so much to say

It’s called gratitude… and that’s right.

(Bass line aptly provided by Adam Yauch/MCA)

Much gratitude to Adam and the Boys for providing a soundtrack to much of childhood and early adulthood.

RIP Earl Scruggs: The bluegrass legend died in a Nashville hospital Wednesday at age 88. Scruggs was a quiet fellow at times, but he didn’t need to say much, considering he basically made banjo a key instrument of bluegrass. Rest in peace, bluegrass man. (Above: Here’s Scruggs performing with fellow banjo man Steve Martin on Letterman. Look at those fingers go.)

Rest in Peace, Jack the Bulldog (1998-2011)
After 80 or so dog years, Jack the Bulldog, (Georgetown’s first live mascot after a long hiatus) has died.
Brought to campus by the “Bring Back Jack” movement in 1998, he moved into New South and LXR residence halls, with Rev. Scott Pilarz, S.J. He retired to Scranton when his Pilarz became president of the University of Scranton. Jack passed away today in Voorhees, NJ, at Pilarz’s parents home.
Jack’s successor, also named Jack (to be precise, John. S. Carroll), is alive and well on the Hilltop, but we’ll miss “the old Jack,” with his loveable slobber and his love of keg beer and ice cubes.
Our thoughts and prayers go to the Pilarz family, and our memories go with Jack.
Lie down, forever, lie down.

Last night, Georgetown lost a great scholar and a great friend.
Professor Christopher Joyner (pictured on left) was one of the world’s experts on international law (in particular, law of the sea), a great supporter of Georgetown student athletes, and on a personal level, an amazing mentor to Liz and friend to both of us.
Dr. J., you will be missed dearly, and our thoughts and prayers go out to your family today.

I’m suddenly really in the mood for Airplane, or one of the Naked Gun films.
